Meet Tom Chambers
We were lucky to catch up with Tom Chambers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tom, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am very happy as an independent … photographer and visual artist … and this state of being gives me great satisfaction. I am able to project “self” … my inner being … and I sometimes have great public impact, and even make money as a part of the process, on occasion. I have had other jobs over a long career, but my personal approach … production/creation as an artist … has always moved me forward and upward.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a documentary photographer and visual artist, and currently working with the pixel as Suprematist Art (“Pixelscapes”) and Kazimir Malevich’s “Black Square” (“Black Square Interpretations”). I have over 100 exhibitions to my credit. My “My Dear Malevich” project has received international acclaim, and it was shown as a part of the “Suprematism Infinity: Reflections, Interpretations, Explorations” exhibition in conjunction with the “100 Years of Suprematism” conference at the Atrium Gallery, Harriman Institute, Columbia University, New York City (2015). I am involved with an online art residency re: Suprematism at St. Petersburg Art Residency (Russia), and I conduct photography workshops.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society as it relates to funding agencies for artists, these agencies should develop more/extensive categories in terms of writing grant proposals for project ideas. Current status is that these agencies make this process very limited for artists to find funds for their project ideas.
